What is Mangosteen?

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) is a tall evergreen tree of the family Hypericaceae. As a fruit tree, it is cultivated widely in a tropical climate. For its delicate flavor, a mixture of sweetness and acidity, mangosteen attracted European adventurers and earned the nickname of “queen of fruits.”
Nippon Shinyaku discovered a strong anti-glycation effect in rhodanthenone B contained in the mangosteen peel.

What is glycation?

When excess sugar in the human body reacts with protein, an essential component of the body, advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are formed, altering protein and lowering its original function.

When collagen, a protein, reacts with sugar, advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are formed.

Impact of glycation on the skin

When glycation advances and AGEs are formed, the collagen structure in the skin is affected, reducing moisture in the skin.

Test with human participants

It is known that one type of AGE resulting from glycative stress non-specifically bridges collagen molecules. It has been confirmed that rhodanthenone B hinders this reaction, suppressing AGE production. It is therefore surmised that reducing glycative stress in the body contributes to moisture retention in the skin.

Functionality of mangosteen extract

* The participants in the placebo control group were given similar-looking and -tasting capsules with no active ingredients.

Method: 19 women in their 20s to 50s were given 200 mg of mangosteen extract or placebo per day for 12 weeks. The rates of change in moisture in their cheek skin were measured before the test and after 4, 8, and 12 weeks.

Results: The moisture in the skin increased in the participants of the mangosteen extract group after 8 and 12 weeks of taking, as compared to those in the placebo control group.
